Muybridge's trotting horse is one of a sequence of plates from The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, the 1881 book that gathered his Palo Alto experiments of 1878 and 1879. The record ties this image to plates numbered 133 and 134, and it was copyrighted in Muybridge's name the same year. Set against the other pictures on this board, it shows how the trot, a gait in which the legs move in diagonal pairs, could be broken into separate frames. Those frames helped settle a long-running argument about whether all four hooves ever leave the ground together at once.
