Among Eadweard Muybridge's many studies of horses, this one shows a trotting horse photographed at Palo Alto, California, where he worked in 1878 and 1879 on a project backed by Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder. Stanford wanted to settle whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during movement, and a row of cameras set along a track produced the answer in a series of frames. The image was reproduced in Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, which is where its title and index entry come from. It is worth noticing how the sequence turns a blur of motion into a set of readable positions.
