Muybridge's sequence of a horse caught mid-leap and walking belongs to a series made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the Stanford family's property under Leland Stanford's sponsorship. Twelve cameras were set along a track and tripped by threads as the animal passed, producing consecutive frames of a single gait. The plates were later issued in The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, copyrighted in 1881, and the print shows how a leaping horse actually moves through the air, a question that artists and horsemen had argued about for generations. Its place in the book is what makes it worth noticing as an early step toward motion pictures.
