Caught in one phase of its walk, this horse is one of the locomotion studies Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Working for Leland Stanford, Muybridge used a row of cameras with tripwire shutters to freeze movements too quick for the eye to follow, and the frames together show how each leg moves in turn. This albumen print comes from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published in 1881, where it appears as numbered plates 123 and 124. The sequence was meant to be read as a set, so the picture is best understood alongside its neighbors in the book.
