Muybridge's "Horses. Walking" belongs to a sequence of plates made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, when a battery of cameras was tripped by threads stretched across a track to capture a horse's stride in successive frames. This albumen print was issued in San Francisco around 1881 and appeared in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it illustrates the gait of a walking horse as a series of fixed positions. Photographs like these settled a long-running argument about whether all four hooves leave the ground at once, and they helped lay the groundwork for motion pictures.
