A horse caught mid-stride at a walk is the subject of this plate, one of the consecutive sequences Eadweard Muybridge made of animals in motion at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. He took these with a row of cameras triggered by tripwires, so each frame recorded a fraction of a second of movement. The work was done on Leland Stanford's horse-breeding farm and helped answer a long-running question about how horses move their legs, which Muybridge later published as a book in 1881. The print is worth studying for how clearly it lays out the sequence of footfalls in a walk.
