Muybridge's sequence of a horse leaping was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the Stanford family's property, using a row of cameras triggered by tripwires as the animal passed. This albumen print is one of the plates later published in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* in 1881, and it captures the horse's body stretched out in midair, a pose that was hard to judge by eye. The series helped settle long-running arguments about whether all four hooves ever left the ground at once, and it stands as an early step toward the moving pictures shown on the gallery's board.
