A horse clears a hurdle three feet, six inches high in this albumen print, one of the plates Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The series grew out of a question posed by Leland Stanford, the former California governor and racehorse breeder, who wanted to know whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge published the plates in 1881 as *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, and his rapid sequences of animals in midair helped lay the groundwork for the motion pictures shown on this board.
