Eadweard Muybridge's sequence of a horse clearing a 3-foot-6-inch hurdle belongs to a series he made at Leland Stanford's horse farm in Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge used a row of cameras with tripwire shutters, set along the track, to capture a fraction of a second at each stage of the animal's motion, and the results were later arranged as a sequence of consecutive positions. This print appeared as plate 46 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published in 1881, when the images were still a novel way to study how animals moved. Muybridge's work, which resolved long-running arguments about whether all four hooves left the ground at once in a gallop, is often cited as a direct precursor of motion pictures.
