Muybridge's series of horses clearing a hurdle is one of the more dynamic plates in his study of animal motion, showing the animal at successive stages of a jump. The sequence was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when Eadweard Muybridge was working on the Stanford family's property with a battery of cameras set along a track. The print is an albumen photograph issued in 1881 as part of *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book that helped establish the scientific study of movement and laid groundwork for motion pictures. Its hurdle height of 3 feet 6 inches is recorded in the title, a detail that anchors the image to the experiment's careful measurement.
