A jumping horse clears a hurdle of 3 feet 6 inches in this sequence-based study, one of the plates Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The series was produced for Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder, who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge used a row of cameras with tripwire shutters to capture those split-second positions, and this print, dated around 1881, was issued as part of the collection published that year. The images did more than answer Stanford's question. They influenced artists who had been painting horses in idealized poses, and they laid groundwork for motion pictures.
