Plate 53 in Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book on animal motion shows a horse clearing a 3-foot-6-inch hurdle. Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the farm of Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate who wanted to know whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground at once. Cameras along a track were tripped by threads the horse broke as it passed. Copyrighted in 1881, this albumen print is one of the earliest series to freeze animal motion into separate frames.
