Caught mid-jump over a hurdle of 3 feet 6 inches, this horse appears in Eadweard Muybridge's series made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The work was commissioned by Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder, who wanted to know whether a galloping horse ever lifts all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge answered with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track. This albumen print was published as no. 48 in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, and the work is often counted among the forerunners of motion pictures.
