In this print, a horse clears a hurdle set at 3 feet 6 inches, one of the jumping studies Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The work was commissioned by Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder, who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge's cameras, tripped by wires as the animals passed, broke each movement into a series of frames. The image was published as plate 49 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* in 1881, and it shows the horse suspended in the air in a way that painters had rarely attempted.
