Eadweard Muybridge photographed this horse clearing a hurdle set at 3 feet 6 inches, one of many jumps he recorded at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. His cameras were triggered by threads stretched across the horse's path, which let him capture a series of moments too brief for the eye to follow. This print was published as plate 47 in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it shows the animal's legs in positions that painters had often drawn incorrectly. Muybridge's work at the Palo Alto stock farm of Leland Stanford, a railroad magnate and horse breeder, helped lead to the motion pictures this board explores.
