Muybridge's plate 44 shows a horse clearing a hurdle set at 3 feet 6 inches, one of the jumping studies he made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The series was commissioned by former governor Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a horse's legs ever all leave the ground in a gallop, and Muybridge used a row of cameras triggered by tripwires to freeze the motion. Printed as an albumen print for the 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, the image has a soft, slightly glossy tone. Its sequence of separate poses helped lay the groundwork for the moving pictures that came later.
