Muybridge's sequence of a horse clearing a jump was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on the Stanford family's property, and this print comes from the series later gathered into his book The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, copyrighted in 1881. Leland Stanford had hired Eadweard Muybridge to settle a question that had divided horsemen for years: whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Using a row of cameras triggered by tripwires, Muybridge caught the stages of a leap in quick succession, and the frames helped prove the moment of full suspension. Viewed today, the image is a key step toward the motion pictures that would follow.
