Muybridge's horse in mid-leap is one of the plates from his sequence made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when he set a row of cameras along a track to capture a galloping horse in rapid succession. This print was issued as part of the study *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, copyrighted in 1881, and it shows the animal suspended with all four legs off the ground. Those stop-motion images, sometimes called early motion studies, helped settle a long-running argument among painters and scientists over how horses actually moved, and they are often considered a forerunner of motion pictures.
