Muybridge's sequence of a walking athlete belongs to a larger body of work he made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, when he set up a row of cameras along a track and triggered them in turn as subjects passed. This print was published in 1881 as part of *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it appears as plate 93, and it captures a man stepping through the stages of a walk. The sequence was a practical answer to a question people had argued about for decades, namely what a body actually does between footfalls, and it helped lay groundwork for the motion pictures that came later.
