Among the Palo Alto studies, this plate isolates a human runner, photographed at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge set a line of cameras along the track, each with a shutter tripped by a thread that the runner broke, so the figure was caught in a series of fractions of a second. The plate was published as number 96 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, copyrighted in 1881, a book that grew out of Leland Stanford's question about whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground. Today it reads as an early step toward moving pictures.
