Among the plates in Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book on animal motion, this sequence of running athletes stands out because it turns from horses and dogs to people. It was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, during Muybridge's work for Leland Stanford's effort to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. Each sequence broke a single movement into a row of consecutive frames, letting viewers study stride and posture in detail that the eye could not catch alone. This albumen print carries that method into a form that was widely circulated at the time.
