Plate 97 in Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* turns from the horses that made his name to human runners, which sets it apart from the rest of the series. Muybridge made the studies at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras with tripwire shutters to capture each stage of a stride. Read as a sequence, the frames break a running body into positions the eye cannot follow at full speed. The album print was issued under Muybridge's copyright and stands among the early attempts to study human movement photographically.
