Unlike the horse studies that made Eadweard Muybridge famous, this print shows people. It is plate 98 in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, listed under the heading "Athletes, Running." Muybridge made the Palo Alto series in 1878 and 1879 for Leland Stanford, the railroad magnate and horse breeder who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. Using a row of trip-wire cameras, Muybridge broke motion into fractions of a second, and his stop-action sequences helped pave the way for motion pictures.
