Most of Eadweard Muybridge's famous sequences show horses, but this print turns to a working ox caught mid-trot, one of the few cattle in his series. It comes from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where Muybridge published photographs made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. He set a row of cameras along a track, each triggered by the animal as it passed, so that the sequence of frames could show the exact placement of each hoof. The album was copyrighted in 1881, and this albumen print dates from around that year. Its value lies in showing that the stride of a trotting ox could be studied as precisely as that of a horse.
