Few images in this series have as much to say about how motion was first studied as this study of a trotting boar. Eadweard Muybridge made it at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras with trip wires that snapped one exposure after another as the animal passed. The sequence was published in 1881 as The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, and this print is plate number 91 from that book. Its frames break a single stride into separate moments, showing the body positions a trotting animal passes through, which the eye cannot resolve at normal speed.
