Among the animal studies in Eadweard Muybridge's series, this plate shows a boar in the middle of a stride, one of the consecutive positions he recorded to break down how animals move. The photographs were made at Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras triggered by tripwires as the animal crossed in front of them. Published in 1881 as *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, the series is an early and influential step toward motion pictures, showing that a moving body could be understood as a sequence of frozen moments.
