Among the Muybridge studies of animal motion, this plate stands out for its subject: an ox caught mid-stride rather than a horse or human figure. The series was made at Eadweard Muybridge's Palo Alto studio in 1878 and 1879, where he set a row of cameras along a track and triggered them in sequence as animals passed. The resulting consecutive images were published in 1881 as The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, and this print, numbered 78 in that volume, is one of the sequence's plates. Its sequence of positions helped settle a long-running question about how legs move in a walking gait, and it remains a useful record of early motion photography.
