Few details survive about which encampment this glass stereograph shows, as the record gives only the title "Camp" and the year 1861. The two negatives, catalogued as left and right halves, were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused them into a single three-dimensional scene. Wet collodion plates had to be coated, exposed, and developed before they dried, so early war photographers often traveled with portable darkrooms. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has since been reconsidered.
