A winter camp of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry at Brandy Station, Virginia, appears in this glass negative, captioned as dating from March 1864. The area had seen a major cavalry battle in June 1863, and by early 1864 Union troops there were resting, drilling and waiting for the spring campaign. Made with the wet collodion process, the plate had to be coated, exposed and developed while still damp, which kept field photographers close to their portable darkrooms. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
