Brandy Station, Virginia, was the site of a major cavalry battle in June 1863, and by spring 1864 the Army of the Potomac was camped in and around it. This stereograph shows a guard mount of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, the morning ceremony where guards were inspected and posted. The sleeve credits the image to O'Sullivan, and the record also lists James F. Gibson as a photographer. Because wet collodion plates had to be exposed and developed within minutes, the sharp detail across the formation reflects considerable skill under field conditions.
