A company of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, a regiment that fought in the Zouave style, is posed in front of Petersburg, Virginia, in August 1864, according to the caption on the negative sleeve. The Zouave name, borrowed from French colonial troops, was used by Union regiments that favored flashy uniforms early in the war. David B. Woodbury, who photographed the Petersburg siege lines that year, made the image on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried. The record also notes a conflicting company letter inked on the negative's emulsion side, a reminder that field photographs were often labeled in haste.
