Capt. John S. Crawford of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry sits for this portrait, which the caption dates to August 1864. The regiment served in the Army of the Potomac's Ninth Corps during the long siege of Petersburg, Virginia, where opposing trench lines stretched for miles and officers sometimes sat for portraits between periods of fighting. The picture is credited to David B. Woodbury, who worked on the Petersburg front that year using wet collodion glass negatives. That process required plates to be coated, exposed, and developed while still damp, so each exposure took careful preparation in the field.
