This glass negative documents a group of officers from the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry at Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864, when the city was under siege by Union forces. The regiment belonged to the Army of the Potomac, and its officers were photographed during a stretch of the war when many units were camped near the trenches for months. The image was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat each glass plate and expose it before the coating dried, so field photographers often worked from portable darkrooms. The negative is attributed to David B. Woodbury, who was active photographing Union soldiers and sites in and around Petersburg that year.
