Field and staff officers of the 39th U.S. Colored Infantry posed in front of Petersburg, Virginia, in September 1864, while the siege lines around the city were still active. Black regiments like this one were raised in 1863 and 1864 after the Emancipation Proclamation opened Union service to African American men, but their commissioned officers were white, a detail worth keeping in mind when looking at the group. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in the Petersburg area during the war and died in 1866. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative in the Library of Congress.
