This glass negative records the officers of the 107th U.S. Colored Infantry posed at Fort Corcoran in Arlington, Virginia, in 1865. The fort was one of the earthworks raised in 1861 on the heights above the Potomac to guard Washington, and it was named for Michael Corcoran, the Irish-born colonel of the 69th New York. By 1865 the United States Colored Troops had grown into a substantial part of the Union army, and portraits like this one document the white officers who commanded Black enlisted men. The wet collodion process demanded careful handling and short working windows, and the negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, an attribution that has since been revised.
