Fort No. 2 at Fort Whipple, on the Arlington heights across the Potomac from Washington, is the setting here, with its artillery batteries photographed in June 1865, weeks after Confederate forces in the East had surrendered. Union engineers built Fort Whipple early in the war as one of the earthen works ringing the capital to guard its approaches. By 1865 many of these forts had lost their urgency, so the view captures the defenses just as they were being left behind. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, and the photographer was once thought to be Alexander Gardner.
