Drewry's Bluff, the high ground on the James River about seven miles below Richmond, was the Confederacy's main river defense for the capital, and this view shows the inside of Fort Darling, the earthwork that crowned it. Union gunboats failed to force the bluff in May 1862, and the fort held until Richmond fell in April 1865. The stereograph pair was made in 1865, and its record notes that it was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, though the attribution has since changed. The two plates together give the depth that single views of the works lack.
