Drewry's Bluff, a fortified height on the James River south of Richmond, was where Confederate batteries turned back a Union naval advance up the river in May 1862. This 1865 glass negative shows the river itself, with the obstructions the Confederates had placed in the channel and the construction work that surrounded them. The caption on the negative sleeve places the scene near Drewry's Bluff, and the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has since been revised. It shows how the war on the James depended as much on engineering in the water as on the guns along the banks.
