The place named here is Dutch Gap on the James River in Virginia, where a Confederate battery sat above the canal cut across the river bend. Union forces under Benjamin Butler began digging the canal in 1864 to shorten the river route past Confederate guns near Richmond, and the work was still underway in 1865, when this picture was taken. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that demanded quick exposure and careful handling in the field. Its photographer was once thought to be Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, though that attribution is no longer certain.
