Two sunken Confederate vessels, the ram *Virginia* and the *Jamestown*, lie in the James River in this stereograph, a pair of images that shows wartime wreckage rather than the camps and batteries that dominate most Civil War photography. The *Virginia* was the ironclad rebuilt from the Union frigate *Merrimack*, which the Confederates scuttled at Norfolk in 1862 before it could be captured. Sinking ships in the river was a common Confederate tactic for blocking Union vessels from reaching Richmond. The record lists the date as 1860, which predates the war, so that date may be an error. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866.
