Varina Landing on the James River was a supply point for Union forces during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, when the army under George B. McClellan advanced up the peninsula toward Richmond. This stereograph shows a pontoon bridge and a supply boat at the landing, a reminder of how much of the Union war effort depended on river transport and temporary crossings. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat and expose each plate while it was still wet, so field work of this kind was slow and demanding. It was taken by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
