A pontoon bridge spans the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in a view the negative sleeve dates to May 20, 1864. That spring the Army of the Potomac was moving through this region during the Overland Campaign, and temporary spans like this one let troops, wagons and supplies cross the river. The picture survives as a stereograph, two plates meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The collection once credited it to Alexander Gardner, a photographer who documented the war.
