Fredericksburg, Virginia sat on the Rappahannock River about halfway between Washington and Richmond, and this stereograph shows the town as seen from the river's east bank. The Union and Confederate armies fought over the town several times during the war, most notably in the December 1862 battle, when Union troops tried to cross the river and assault the heights beyond. By 1863 the town was occupied and heavily marked by the fighting, and this view records that condition from the opposite shore. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, and the catalog notes that the photographer was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has since been questioned.
