Few photographs from the war name Native American soldiers this directly. This stereograph pair shows men the caption calls "Indian sharpshooters," wounded on Marye's Heights outside Fredericksburg, Virginia, and the record ties them to the Wilderness fighting. Marye's Heights was already known for the Confederate stone wall attacks of December 1862, and the caption's "May 1864" date should be checked, since the heights were contested in May 1863. The negatives were once attributed to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
