Gloucester Point, on the York River across from Yorktown, is the setting here, and the picture shows the water battery there with a Dahlgren 11-inch smooth-bore naval gun among its defenses. Confederate forces fortified this spot in 1861 and 1862 to keep Union gunboats from moving up the river during the Peninsula Campaign. John A. Dahlgren designed the heavy smooth-bore cannon that the Navy adapted for shore batteries, and the gun's bulk stands out in the photograph. The image survives as a wet collodion glass stereograph negative from June 1862, once credited to Alexander Gardner.
