Cotton bales stacked into earthworks at Yorktown, Virginia, make this one of the more unusual defenses of the Civil War. The caption on the negative sleeve reads "King Cotton," a nod to the Southern staple that the Confederacy had hoped would win foreign support. In spring 1862, Union forces under George B. McClellan besieged the Confederate lines here during the Peninsula Campaign, and such improvised works show how short the Confederacy was of conventional fortification materials. The image survives as a stereograph pair, made as two glass negatives taken by photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
