The trench in this stereograph pair is an older defense near Yorktown, a ditch dug by the British under Lord Cornwallis before his surrender in 1781 ended the decisive campaign of the American Revolution. Eighty years later the ground was fought over again. In spring 1862, Union forces under George McClellan besieged Confederate works here during the Peninsula Campaign, and the old lines were put to use. David B. Woodbury made this pair that year with the wet collodion process, and the two plates together give the earthworks a sense of depth.
