The caption on this glass negative names the group as Prince de Joinville and friends at Camp Winfield Scott near Yorktown in May 1862. The prince, a son of French King Louis Philippe, traveled with the Union Army of the Potomac during the Peninsula Campaign, when McClellan's forces were advancing toward Richmond. The stereograph was made by David B. Woodbury using the wet collodion process, which required plates to be exposed and developed quickly while still damp.
