Three members of the exiled House of Orléans, the Prince de Joinville and his nephews the Duc de Chartres and Comte de Paris, stand before the Army of the Potomac's headquarters near Yorktown in May 1862. The princes had fled France after the 1848 revolution that ended the reign of their relative Louis-Philippe, and they joined George McClellan's campaign against Richmond as volunteer aides. The image is a glass negative from the Civil War collection, made during the spring Peninsula Campaign, when the siege of Yorktown was the army's central effort. The caption is printed by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that issued many stereographs of the war.
