Few views of the Peninsula show Confederate defenses as plainly as this pair of plates, which captures earthworks and stacked ammunition near Yorktown. The Confederates had built these lines across the peninsula to slow the Union advance toward Richmond, and in the spring of 1862 Gen. George B. McClellan's army spent weeks preparing a siege before the defenders withdrew in early May. Photographed that year by David B. Woodbury using wet collodion glass plates, the two halves were meant to be seen together in a stereoscope, which gives the earthworks a sense of depth. The caption's mention of ammunition is a reminder of how much material both armies moved onto the field.
